I don't think you have to be a boomer to appreciate the humor in this book. Fact is, it's hilarious! It's just a little more so if your going through the aging process, running away from it, or denying it all together. Starting out writing about a book just finished while still spontaneously breaking into guffaws is a challenge. So while breathing in, the following was what his reviewer wrote for the last book by humorist extraordinaire Karla Telega `This reader's first introduction to author Karla Telega was in her co-editorship of 'My Funny Valentine America's Most Hilarious Writers Take On Love, Romance, and Other Complications' - one of the funniest books to be released last year. Now she is on her own as a novelist with BOX OF ROCKS A MAGGIE GORSKI MYSTERY and it looks as though this is a springboard for her new career as a burgeoning talent for comedic writing. She writes well with subtleties that on first reading of this book may escape the reader because of the page after page of laughter etc.' Well, she's done it again! I NEVER DROVE A BULLDOZER THERE'S A HOLE IN MY BUCKET LIST is not only incredibly hilarious, it also touches on the issues of those of us who are some where between declining gonadal function and trying to remember which retirement home has a sale on for the Golden Years.
Yes, Talega knows every one of those embarrassing moments of `memory pauses' that increase in frequency with every day. The names of her chapters indicate the area of aging aspects she will be addressing (in a very `been there, done that' manner); Playing Well With Others, Change the Locks on Your Empty Nest (get a dog, a hobby, a question/answer list about shopping habits, outings, voting, grandchildren etc), Medical nuances (It's All in Your Head) that touches on WebMD, unwanted flaccidity, etc, Burden To Your Children, Mid-Life Madness (including inappropriate piercings or tattooing, bad hair days, etc), body transformations and dressing, Financial Preparations for a Penniless Retirement, Ordering off the Senior Menu, Memory Dysfunction, Generational Gaps and how to perceive them (`You are age 56 and over, and becoming an opinionated curmudgeon, all judgmental of anyone younger than you,'), and on and on.
Buried on every page are jewles, such as `Gas is about simple mathematics. The more you poop, the less you bloat. The more you age, the less you poop. As thoughtful senior citizens, we have a responsibility to the public to curtail our holiday festivities. Avoid corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick' day, refried beans on Cinco de Mayo, and deviled eggs on the fourth of July cookout etc.'
Yet for the wealth of hilarity here Karla Talega is a humanist and her writing is never aimed at sensitive areas (well, not very often). She cares about her readers and is writing about her own perceptions of herself and of those around her `at that awkward age between hot flashes and the senior menu.' After reading "Box of Rocks" I was eager to read, "I Never Drove a Bulldozer" as well. It didn't disappoint. I laughed at some parts and found others poignant but in the end, it left me with a smile on my face.
I liked it. Baby Boomers will get quite a few laughs.
Enjoyed every word of this hilarious book! Karla's humorous accounts of the aging process will relate to anyone over the age of...well, anyone. I have, and will continue to recommend this book to all those in search of full-on-belly-buster laughter. Anything this author writes is read-worthy, and you can bet you'll walk away with a lighter attitude toward life.
